A curbless shower conversion replaces a tub with a shower whose floor sits level with the bathroom floor, so there is no edge to step over. Homeowners in Phoenix, AZ choose it for its clean, open look and for easier, step-free access.
What the Project Involves
A curbless shower is more than removing the curb. The shower floor must slope gently toward the drain while staying flush at the entry, so the floor is often recessed between the joists or built up on the bathroom side. Your installer checks the floor structure before the design is final, since this step decides what is possible.
Linear drains placed along a wall or at the entry are common because they allow a single, gentle slope. Waterproofing covers the whole shower area and often extends beyond it, because water can spread across a flush floor. Tile or a solid-surface base, the wall finish, and glass or a fixed panel complete the build.
When This Option Makes Sense
- You want a step-free entry that works for any age.
- You plan to age in place or expect needs to change.
- You want a continuous floor that makes the room look larger.
- You are open to a more involved build than a standard base swap.
What Affects the Price
Structural and floor changes, drain type, the size of the waterproofed area, tile, and glass drive the cost. A curbless shower often costs more than a standard-height base because of the added planning and floor work. Pricing for a curbless shower conversion depends on the project and a quote. Permit rules for Phoenix, AZ can affect the scope, so confirm them early. Planning the structure first prevents surprises once the floor is opened, so ask your installer how the floor will be built and how water will be kept inside the shower.
